The United Nations Security Council (UNSC), through Resolution 2292 (2016), authorised UN Member States, acting individually or through regional organisations, to inspect vessels on the high seas off the coast of Libya where there were reasonable grounds to suspect violations of the UN arms embargo. The Resolution also required Member States to seize and dispose of any prohibited arms or related materiel discovered during such inspections.
On 25 November 2025, UNSC Resolution 2804 (2025) extended that authorisation by a further six months until 25 May 2026. As the UNSC did not renew the authorisation beyond that date, references to the European Union military operation in the Mediterranean (EUNAVFOR MED IRINI) in Decision (CFSP) 2015/1333 and Regulation (EU) 2016/44 were removed.
